THE STORY OF ML IN HAARLEM
ML is located in the former printing and type foundry of Koninklijke Joh. Enschedé. Izaak Enschedé and his son Johannes established their printing and type foundry in the city center of Haarlem in 1703. The company remained active there until 1992. After the founding of the printing house, Enschedé quickly gained renown, among other things for printing the Oprechte Haarlemsche Courant, the second oldest daily newspaper in the world. In addition to printing, the company was also involved in type casting and the production of matrices and dies. In the early 19th century, Enschedé began printing banknotes for the new Dutch Central Bank and received the first order to print postage stamps for the Dutch Postal Service. Postage stamps from 65 other countries followed later. After Koninklijke Joh. Enschedé moved out in 1992, the monumental building stood neglected for several years. Until it was purchased in 2005 by two enthusiastic hospitality entrepreneurs well-known in Haarlem. After an extensive renovation, in which the original details and interiors were preserved as much as possible, the monumental building became an atmospheric and modern hospitality establishment. The business, named Stempels, was a household name in Haarlem for 12 years and was taken over by Mark & Liane Gratama in March 2018. Following a two-month renovation, during which the history of the building was cherished, the hospitality business continues under the name ML. Restaurant ML started in a small building on the Lange Veerstraat in November 2004. After a period of 3.5 years, ML moved to the beautiful national monument at Kleine Houtstraat 70, the former pawn shop. On November 23, 2010, ML was awarded the coveted Michelin star. After a period of 10 years, ML is now situated at the most beautiful hospitality location in Haarlem, with a magnificent view of the St. Bavo Church.
